A bit of History

Apart from the 13th arrondissement, several Chinatowns exist in Paris. The
The oldest Chinese community is that of the Arts-et-Métiers district, in 1900; while the first Chinese restaurant opened its doors in the Latin Quarter in 1912. In the middle of the First World War, the Chinese stayed in France and settled in Paris, in the Gare de Lyon area. In this area, Chinese workers brought from China to help in the war passed through; they were supposed to be repatriated to China, but many did not want to go back and settled down. Later, in 1949, Mao Zedong’s China closed its borders and the Chinese community remained in the French capital. Several waves of immigration have taken place since the 1970s from several South-East Asian countries; these refugees have settled in Paris and created this “Chinatown” district of Paris. The 13th arrondissement was chosen because of its large number of vacant homes at the time. Today, the 13th arrondissement’s Chinatown is an authentic and touristy district.
