Discover the Cartier Foundation near our hotel in Paris 13

Located in the 13th arrondissement of Paris, the Fondation Cartier is a temple entirely dedicated to contemporary art in all its forms of expression.

The history of the Fondation Cartier and its architecture

The Cartier Foundation was created by Maison Cartier in 1984. An astonishing example of corporate sponsorship, the foundation moved to Boulevard Raspail, in Paris, in 1994, after having stayed for 10 years near Versailles, in Jouy- en-Josas. A programming of events showcasing contemporary art is then proposed, and themes rarely addressed elsewhere find their place.

The strong identity of the foundation is expressed through all forms of art, and numerous astonishing encounters are organized between artists, philosophers, scientists, architects and musicians.

But the singularity of the Cartier Foundation is also revealed by the architecture of the place, imagined by the famous French architect Jean Nouvel. THEglass and metal building in the heart of Paris astonishes and attracts attention.

A unique player in corporate sponsorship

The ambitions of the Cartier Foundation are to promote artists and their works through thematic exhibitions, in order to spread the power and beauty of contemporary art. Launched by Alain Dominique Perrin, former CEO of Cartier International, the foundation thus programs exhibitions, and commissions works from artists, in order to expand its collection.

Today the Cartier Foundation collection is such that it is regularly exported abroad, increasing the international notoriety of the project.

In addition, evenings are organised, such as the Nomadic Evenings, where the visual arts are brought into contact with other modes of expression by artists from the performing arts.

A commissioning policy that goes beyond traditional sponsorship

The Fondation Cartier stands out for its atypical approach to sponsorship. Here, commissions placed with artists, whether for a work, for a series of works, or even for an entire exhibition, are a way of supporting the artist by creating a relationship that goes well beyond patronage.

From conception to completion, the support of the foundation is complete, offering new opportunities to artists who are entrusted with large-scale projects.

Since its creation, the foundation has placed orders with many artists, such as Marc Couturier, Absalon, Jean-Michel Othoniel, or Huang Yong Ping. Since 1994, the orders are more numerous and more diversified, and allow to approach art without limit.

Discovering new talents

Since its creation, the foundation has displayed its ambition to discover new talents hitherto unknown in France and Europe. True springboard for young artists, the foundation has already contributed to the success of many artists, such as video artist Pierrick Sorin, designer Marc Newson, sculptor Ron Mueck and photographer Alair Gomes.

The foundation also puts Japanese art in the spotlight, and introduces the European public to today’s renowned artists, such as Rinko Kawauchi, Takashi Murakami, or Tanadori Yokoo.

Come and browse the exhibitionThe valley de Fabrice Hyber

If you are passing through the Montparnasse district between December 8, 2022 and April 30, 2023, go to the Fondation Henri Cartier to discover the exposition The valley, by the painter Fabrice Hyber. With more than 60 paintings, including 15 created especially for the event, the artist invites you to follow the twists and turns of his reflections and thoughts through different rooms.

We discover the work of several years echoing the immense forest that the artist has been growing in the Vendée bocage for more than 30 years. We discover the correlation between the art of sowing seeds, and that of sowing images and signs in a process of artistic creation.
